The temperature drops a little in August compared with July, fluctuating around an average level of 20-28 degrees Celsius (68-82.4 degrees Fahrenheit). Guizhou weather in August is not really hot, especially in the western part of Guizhou at higher altitude. In Liupanshui, the highest temperature is no more than 27℃ (80.6℉). Even for the hottest records, the average high temperature is 34℃ (93.2℉) in Tongren, while the maximum isn’t over 37℃ (98.6℉).
Guizhou has a big temperature gap between daytime and nighttime. In cooler western Guizhou, the low temperature can drop to 16℃ (60.8℉) at night in Liupanshui during August. The night temperature is only 24℃ (75.2℉) in Tongren, too. Thus, you need to warp up yourselves warm when staying overnight, especially in western Guizhou.

What to Wear in Guizhou in August?

Short-sleeve clothes are suitable during the day to adapt to the Guizhou climate in August. T-shirt, shorts, dress, etc. are great, and you can add a sunproof jacket on the top. Sunhat and sunglasses are also useful against the strong ultraviolet rays in August. You can also prepare a thin denim jacket or shirt, to put on in the cooler evening and early morning. When you go to higher places such as Fanjing Mountain or the west of Guizhou, thicker outwear can be packed, like cardigan or fleece.

Tips:
1. Waterproof hiking shoes or stream trekking shoes are best to explore Guizhou natural beauty. Good slip resistance is important on your Guizhou trip, especially in a rain or a waterside attraction.
2. Umbrella, raincoat and rainboots are the musts in Guizhou.
3. Long pants are more advised in rural areas. Firstly, it can prevent from the sun and mosquito bites. Secondly, it can protect yourselves in a certain degree when you are climbing a mountain with both feet and hands.
4. When you go to a natural scenic spot, it’s suggested to take mosquito repellent with you.
5. If you travel with kids, prepare more clothes for the kids. Change their clothes once they get wet, for dabbling by water or getting caught in a sudden rain.

Guizhou is a welcomed destination to escape from summer heat in August. Bijie and Liupanshui in western Guizhou are the coolest areas there, where Zhijin Cave is the best-known. Jiucaiping is very beautiful on the Wumeng Ridge in August, with both the cloud sea and wild leek flowers all over the slopes. Besides, August is also a great time to see the sea of clouds on high mountains after a rain, which looks like a wonderland.
 

Tips:

1. Some attractions would be closed for sudden rain storms, such as Xiaoqikong Scenic Area and Water-Curtain Cave in Huangguoshu Waterfalls. Watch the local weather forecast and notices of the scenic areas in time. If it’s OK, don’t book the tickets too early.
2. If you go to the attractions just after a storm, you will see the muddy water there. If you’d like to see clear water, please go there 2-3 days later.
3. August is a peak season of travelling in Guizhou. Thus, it’s suggested to avoid the peak hours – to get to the spot early in the morning or later in the afternoon. It would be better a little during the weekdays.
4. Travelling to Guizhou in August 2026, you can experience some ethnic festivals as well. Torch Festival of Yi ethnic group is on the August 6th 2026 according to the traditional calendar, which is celebrated in Bijie and Liupanshui. In some years, Torch Festival may fall at the end of July.
