What Is the Climate like in Hohhot, China? 

Hohhot, located in the middle part of Inner Mongolia in Northern China, has a typical temperate continental climate significantly influenced by monsoon winds. The temperature gap is huge both between day and night and year-round, and the rainfall is not abundant. Spring has generally mild temperatures, but it is windy and dry. Summer is a bit hot but not scorching, and is a popular summer resort; it’s the rainiest season here, although the total amount is not big. Autumn is cool and a little rainy. Winter is cold and long.

Temperatures 

Hohhot, influenced by its geographical conditions and monsoon winds, experiences relatively variable temperatures throughout the year. January is the coldest month, with highs ranging from -10 to 3°C (14-37°F) and the extreme lowest temperature of -17°C (1°F) during the daytime. July is the hottest month, with highs generally hovering between 26 and 31 degrees Celsius (79-88 degrees Fahrenheit). 

Nestled deep inland north of the Yin Mountains, Hohhot also experiences significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, ranging from 10-20 degrees Celsius (50-68 degrees Fahrenheit). 
 

Precipitation and Humidity

Overall, Hohhot receives relatively low precipitation throughout the year, averaging only approximately 400 mm (16 inches) annually. June to September see the most rainfall of the year, with July being the rainiest month, getting the rainfall of 124 mm. The rest of the months are quite dry, receiving less than 35 mm per month. 

Due to its inland location and sparse precipitation, Hohhot also experiences very dry air, with an average humidity level of 36 % - 59 %. Except for the summer months, you always need to take moisturizing measures.

The best times to visit Hohhot are summer, from June to August, and autumn, from September to October. Summer in Hohhot is not scorching, or can be described as cool compared with other popular destinations in China. For instance, the perceived temperature here is 8-10°C (46-50°F)  lower than in Beijing in summer. Vast green grasslands also make it perfect for a summer holiday. Autumn is another peak season for tourists, thanks to its lovely climate and stunning fall foliage.

Spring: April to May

 Weather Overview: 
Spring in Hohhot marks the gradual return of warmth and life. Vegetation begins to revive, and by late May, the grasslands turn lush green. In April, daily highs often exceed 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit), while May enjoys highs of around 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit). Temperature differences between day and night remain significant, often exceeding 10°C (50°F). Spring is also Hohhot’s dry season, seeing very little rainfall but frequent winds. Plus, sandstorms occasionally occur. 
 
 What to Wear: 
Outerwear: Light down jacket or windbreaker for chilly mornings and evenings
Inner layers: Knitwear, sweaters, or hoodies for layering flexibility
Bottoms: Comfortable jeans or fleece-lined sweatpants. 
Footwear: Lightweight and windproof high-ankle sneakers to prevent dust from entering 
 
 Travel Advice: 
1. April to May is the low travel season with fewer crowds and lower prices, but some attractions start to open after winter closure, such as Hadamen National Forest Park. 
2. The grasslands have not turned green yet till late May. Considering this and the windy climate, city sightseeing is more recommended: 
Visit Dazhao Temple and Xilituzhao Palace to explore the city’s Buddhism culture; 
Stop by Inner Mongolia Museum to learn about local history and nomadic culture; 
Stroll along Saishang Old Street to experience Hohhot’s traditional architecture and atmosphere.

Summer: June to August 

 Weather Overview: 
Compared with other major travel destinations in China, Hohhot’s weather in summer is not so hot and pleasant, thanks to its unique geography. Its daytime highs generally range between 26-30°C (79-86°F), and even at noon, temperatures rarely exceed 33°C (91°F). Thus, the heat feels less oppressive, but UV rays are quite harsh. After sunset, temperatures drop sharply, usually to around 13-17°C (55-63°F) and you even need to add an overcoat to keep warm. Summer also marks the city’s rainy season. But it is far less frequent compared with world’s other destinations. 

 What to Wear: 
Upper Clothing: Short-sleeve shirts or T-shirts during the day; add a light jacket or cardigan for the cooler evenings.
Bottom Clothing: Lightweight pants or jeans; shorts are suitable for daytime outdoor activities.
Footwear: Comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking on grasslands or volcanic terrain.
Accessories: A folding umbrella, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. 

 Travel Highlights: 
1. Gegentala Grasslands in July and August: Experience the grand Nadam Fair, enjoy horse racing, wresting, and archery performances, and fully immerse yourselves into nomadic culture. 
2. Wulanhada Volcano Geopark: Fully open in summer, this site offers lush scenery and a variety of outdoor activities. In the evening, you can enjoy campfires and fireworks under the starry sky. 
3. Chelechuan Highland Grassland and Huitengxile Grassland: The grasslands turn vivid green in summer, ideal for impressive photos and a relaxed picnic experience. 
4. City Attractions: The mild summer climate makes urban sightseeing really comfortable. Why not visit Dazhao Temple, Xilituzhao Palace, and the Five-Pagoda Temple to explore Hohhot’s cultural charm without the discomfort of intense heat?

Autumn: September to October

 Weather Overview: 
Hohhot in autumn becomes cooler and cooler. In September, daily highs range from 23 to 27°C (73-81°F). October only sees daily highs of 11-18°C (52-64°F). Still, the temperature difference is rather huge, and you may even feel quite chilly at night. To deal with the coldness, Hohhot begins operating its heating systems since mid-October. Precipitation here also gradually decreases in autumn, from 52 mm in September to 21 mm in October. Snowfall is possible this season, but rare. 

 What to Wear: 
September: Light long-sleeve shirts, a jacket, jeans, and sneakers. 
October: Warm sweaters or hoodies, a windproof jacket, a thick overcoat for night, jeans, sweatpants, thermal leggings, warm shoes, and sneakers. 

 Travel Highlights: 
1. Chilechuan and Huitengxile Grasslands: The grasslands turn golden-yellow under clear blue skies, creating breathtaking autumn scenery. The cool, dry air and endless horizons make it ideal for hiking, horseback riding, or simply taking in the vast landscape.
2. Hadamen National Forest Park: Depending on the variable temperatures within a single day, you’ll capture both autumn leaves' view and winter’s snowy beauty: towering trees are shrouded in light snow and mist at dawn, and golden fall foliage landscapes at dusk.

Winter: November to March

 Weather Overview: 
Winter in Hohhot is cold and dry, with dramatic temperature fluctuations between day and night. Even at midday, temperatures often stay around 2-3°C (36-37°F), while early mornings and evenings can plunge well below -10°C (14°F). In February and March, you’ll encounter milder days exceeding 10°C (50°F), signaling the approach of spring. The temperature gap between the urban area and the surrounding suburban areas can be quite huge: the city is 5-7°C (41-44°F) warmer. 
Influenced by cold Siberian air masses, strong winds are common, making the already cold air feel even more bitter. Although precipitation is scarce, the extended winter months mean that snow tends to linger. 

 What to Wear: 
Outerwear: Windproof and water-proof jackets, such as a long down coat and a 3-in-1 windbreaker
Inner layer: Sweat-wicking underwear and warm sweaters 
Bottoms: Fleece-lined hiking pants paired with thermal leggings underneath
Footwear: Non-slip snow boots and comfortable hiking shoes 
Accessories: A scarf, a warm hat and gloves.

 Travel Advice: 
1. Due to its cold and dry climate in Hohhot, winter is the low travel season, meaning fewer tourists and lower travel costs. If you don’t mind the climate and prepare well, it’s ok to visit Hohhot during this period, as Hohhot boasts impressive winter scenery. You can witness a golden sunrise and breathtaking frost flowers in Qiandao Lake and enjoy a stunning snow-capped mountain view along the way. 
2. The historical sites are equally amazing in cold winter, such as Dazhao Temple, Xilituzhao Temple and Inner Mongolia Museum. 
3. Some attractions would close in winter, such as Hadamen National Forest Park.
