Bund Sightseeing Tunnel
Bund Sightseeing Tunnel crosses beneath the Huangpu River, connecting the Bund in Puxi and Lujiazui Finance Trade Zone in Pudong. By taking the fully transparent, self-driving sightseeing cable car that runs along the track of the tunnel, one can quickly travel back and forth between the two banks of the river. With a length of 646.7 meters (0.4 miles), it has been operating for over two decades since its first opening to the public in October 2001, and has been repeatedly included among the top ten most distinctive tunnels in the world. The tunnel serves not only as a convenient transportation line but also an attraction of fascinating visual experience – it takes you just 3-5 minutes to travel through it, and during this short period you can appreciate a variety of light shows accompanied by corresponding sound effects, making you feel like an explorer traveling through time and space.
At the very beginning, passengers, acting as “explorers”, enter the “Time Tunnel” where a special effect of cracked aluminum sheets covering the sidewalls is projected, accompanied by simulated sound of landing, which indicates passengers’ entry into the earth’s sub-strata and arrival in scientific space.
After that, they head to the “Vortex Tunnel”, in which the light waves fly backwards at a high speed, with optical fibers shining brightly and forming many of gorgeous spirals.
The next comes the “Shuttle Tunnel”— many rocks are projected vividly on the sidewalls, coupled with psychedelic lighting, giving passengers the impression of traveling through layers of rock.
As passengers get close to the bottom of Huangpu River, there are dazzling lights from every direction showing spectacular scenes of magma bubbling up and down.
As “explorers” gradually rises, they fly away from Magmatic Ejection Tunnel and enters the other Shuttle Tunnel. Here, they penetrate the earth’s strata once again, aiming to escape from the earth’s crust.
Next, passengers enter the Deepsea Tunnel to wonder at the underwater scenery.
While traveling through the Vortex Tunnel, the “explorers” rush out from the sea and fly high into the sky, which is quite an adventure to cherish.
Finally, passengers enter a new Time Tunnel where they seem to wander in space and be close to flying meteors. Culminating with the excitement of traveling through a myriad of stars, passengers arrive at the destination on the other side of the tunnel.
The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is equipped with continuous track and unmanned cable car with automatic bidirectional operation, and there are rotating platforms at both ends of the tunnel, which can quickly make the carriage turn around in place. It is precisely this highly efficient driving technology unaffected by ground traffic that contributes to its role of being the fastest and most convenient mode of transportation between Pudong and Puxi. Besides, since the carriages are pulled by cables inside the tunnel instead of their own power systems, the risk of fire accidents is significantly reduced.
Another unique aspect about the tunnel is its adoption of multifunctional high-tech lighting and projection equipment. The inner walls of the tunnel are embedded with a large sets of dynamic LED light strips and modules, combined with technologies such as laser projection and holographic imaging, generating splendid light and shadow effects with various themes throughout the journey.
Yes, it’s worth a ride especially for family trip since kids would find it a fascinating experience to travel through the tunnel with its visually and auditorily playful effects. Besides, it’s also worthwhile for couple trip to enjoy their dating time. In addition, for time-pressed tourists, this transportation is an optimal option that helps them skip the bustling metro exits and get to the target side promptly.
