Beijing Weather in August

Season: Summer
In short: hot and rainy, especially in the first half month

How Hot Is Beijing in August?

August is still hot, but less scorching than in July, the hottest month of Beijing. High temperatures over 35°C (95°F) usually appear in the first two weeks of the month. Together with the high humidity, it is stuffy in this period.

From mid-August on, the temperature begins to drop gradually, because the Beginning of Autumn, one of the 24 solar terms, usually falls on August 7th, 8th, or 9th. To be more specific, in the daytime of the second half with the temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), you may feel hot but not burning in the sunshine and comfortable in shady places; in the evening, you will feel cool with the temperature of about 20°C (68°F).

Besides, you should note that on some rainy days, the temperature is lower than usual.

What to Bring for the Beijing Trip in August

Beijing Clothes in August

Clothes: Summer clothes, including shorts, skirts, dresses, tank tops, T-shirts, and short-sleeved shirts, are suitable for this month. Clothing made of cotton is better, since it is breathable. Try to bring more clothes for change, because the weather of Beijing in August is hot and you may sweat a lot. In addition, you are advised to bring a sun protection jacket to protect yourself from the sunshine during the day, which can also be used to keep you warm at cooler night.

Shoes: You are recommended to bring lightweight walking shoes to keep your feet comfortable when visiting the large-area attractions that require a lot of walk. Moreover, they should be anti-slippery because there are some rainy days this month.

Others: Sunscreen, suntan lotion, and sunglasses are still necessary. Bring a parasol to protect you from either the sun or the rain.

Travel Recommendation Rate:

In August, the scenery of Beijing is quite beautiful. The Great Wall is decorated by lush green trees on the hillsides, the lotus flowers are in full bloom at Summer Palace and Beihai Park, and the sunsets at Shichahai are stunning… However, the climate of Beijing is actually not favorable for outdoor activities. 1. Check the weather forecast in advance. Try to avoid rainy days, and if you fail to do so, arrange some trips that can go well even on rainy days as Plan B and always bring rain gear.
2. Find a hotel with convenient transportation. This way, you can arrive at popular scenic spots like the Great Wall earlier in the morning, when the temperature is a little more comfortable.
3. Avoid traveling in the middle of the day, as it is very hot at this time. You can find a highly rated restaurant to enjoy some local delicacies like Peking Roast Duck. In the early afternoon, the temperature is still a little high, so it is recommended to visit indoor or tree-shaded attractions such as museums or parks.
4. Drinking plenty of water will help prevent you from getting heat stroke on a hot August day.
5. Badaling Great Wall can be very crowded with local Chinese students and their parents in August, the summer holiday. Mutianyu Great Wall, also well-preserved, is usually less crowded. Besides, if you want to hike on the Great Wall at cooler nights, the Badaling Great Wall and Simatai Great Wall provide night tours at that time.
