Cold Overall and Changeable

Guilin Cold Climate in December
December marks the arrival of early winter in Guilin, with daytime highs of 13-21°C (55-70°F), which is quite a large temperature range. The daily temperature varies noticeably depending on cloud cover. On sunny days, the temperature can feel pleasantly mild, with daytime highs occasionally 24-26°C (75-79°F). Cloudy or rainy days tell a different story: accompanied by cold winds, the daytime temperatures may drop sharply to around 9-14°C (48-57°F). What’s more, it’s possible to experience cold air masses this month, though occasionally, making the daily high drop significantly to 4-7°C (75-79°F) for several days. Moreover, it is often accompanied by strong winds, intensifying the perceived chill.

After the sunset, temperatures fall quickly. During normal conditions, nighttime temperatures hover between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius (45-50 degrees Fahrenheit). When cold air masses arrive from the north, the cooling becomes more dramatic, with the nighttime temperatures as low as 1-4°C (34-39°F).

In high-elevation areas such as Mao’er Mountain, temperatures may drop below freezing. Frost, icy roads, and occasional freezing conditions can occur. Travelers planning mountain visits should always check the weather and road conditions beforehand.

Low-water Season with A Little Rain

December is one of the driest months in Guilin, with an average precipitation of 43 mm from 9 rainy days. Rain usually appears as light drizzle or scattered showers, and long-lasting storms are uncommon.

Occasionally, heavier rainfall combined with fog may appear. While this can obscure distant mountain views along the Li River, the mist also adds a poetic atmosphere to the landscape, which is exactly the essence of the Guilin view.

Because precipitation is limited, the Li River enters its low-water season. Water levels drop and some riverbanks appear visible. As a result, the reflection scenery becomes less dramatic; river cruise routes may shorten or stop temporarily; some rafts can run aground in shallow sections. For this reason, rafting is usually less recommended in winter. Walking along riverside parks often provides a better experience.

During strong cold waves, the urban area may occasionally experience sleet. In higher mountain areas, snowfall becomes more likely.

Overall Pleasant Air

December actually has the lowest humidity of the entire year in Guilin, with an average humidity of 67%. When the sky is clear, the air feels fresh and relatively comfortable, making outdoor walks enjoyable. However, gray days bring a classic damp winter chill typical of southern China.

Under suitable humidity and temperature conditions, frost-covered trees may appear in Mao’er Mountain.

Sunshine Hours and Daylight Hours

December skies in Guilin often appear overcast, and sunshine hours decrease to about 4 hours per day on average. Ultraviolet radiation also weakens, with a maximum UV index of around 5. Although winter light may not appear as bright as summer sunshine, the softer atmosphere suits Guilin’s misty landscape well. Layers of fog drifting through limestone peaks often create tranquil scenes.

Because daylight length hovers about 11 hours and scenic spots are spread out across the region, visitors should plan their daily itineraries carefully to make good use of time.

Besides, don’t be disappointed by the short daytime hours. Even though sunsets arrive earlier, evenings remain enjoyable. Night views in Guilin are particularly attractive. Illuminated landmarks such as Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas reflect beautifully across the lakes. A night cruise around the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area offers a relaxing way to end the day. Afterward, travelers can also wander through East-West Alley, where local snacks and restaurants create a lively evening atmosphere.

Packing List for Guilin Travel in December 2026

December Wear in Guilin
Upper Clothing: During sunny daytime hours, a sweatshirt or sweater usually works well. For other hours with lower temperatures, an outer layer, such as a thick jacket, a light down coat, or an insulated outdoor jacket, helps block wind and retain warmth. If you are sensitive to cold, thermal underwear becomes useful.

Bottom Clothing: Early mornings and evenings can feel quite chilly. Thermal leggings combined with jeans or thicker trousers provide good protection. If sightseeing only during daytime in the city, regular long pants or sweatpants are generally sufficient.

Footwear: Non-slip sneakers or walking shoes are recommended, since wet pavements after drizzle can become slippery.

Accessories:
Sunglasses for bright sunlight and photography
Umbrella for occasional drizzle
Scarf for extra warmth, especially near rivers or lakes

Mirro-like Rice Terrace
Mirro-like Rice Terrace
December is an OK time to visit Guilin. Despite the relatively cold climate, Guilin in December receives only a little rain and still offers worthwhile scenery. Plus, December is a shoulder season for visitors, meaning a peaceful and budget-friendly trip. You can check the following recommendations:

1. The Longji Rice Terraces enter their winter irrigation period. Water fills the terraces and forms mirror-like reflections across the hillsides. The landscape becomes quiet and atmospheric, very different from the golden harvest season.
2. Early December still preserves the last traces of autumn color. In Haiyang Town, golden ginkgo leaves may still amaze you a lot.
3. If temperatures feel too cold outdoors, caves provide comfortable alternatives. Silver Cave maintains a constant temperature of about 20°C (68°F) throughout the year. Inside, illuminated stalactites create spectacular scenery.

Other Tips

1. Although December receives lighter tourist numbers, well-known attractions like Elephant Trunk Hill still gather lots of visitors. Therefore, it’s best to avoid weekends and make reservations in advance.
