Beijing - Baotou Train

Currently, 11 pairs of trains including overnight sleeper trains are running between Beijing and Baotou. The travel time varies from 10.5 - 17 hours due to the different running distance of 697 kilometers (433 miles) to 1,192 kilometers (741 miles). Ticket fare for a hard sleeper costs CNY 196 - 299.5. 

They are running between Baotou Railway Station and Beijing Railway Station/ Beijing West Railway Station, with some stop ofe a few minutes at Baotou East Railway Station

High Speed trains will be available by the end of 2019, by then the travel time will be greatly reduced to 4 hours or so.

K and Z types of trains are used for this journey. Among them, Z types and some K types including Z317/Z318, Z179/Z180, K55/K56 take the shortest time of 10.5 – 11.5 hours or so. If possible, passengers had better travel by any of them to save some time.

 K1115/K1117: Gaobeidian, Baoding, Dingzhou, Shijiazhuang North, Yangquan North, Taiyuan, Jiaocheng, Wenshui, Fenyang, Lvliang, Liulin South, Mizhi, Yulin, Ordos, Dongsheng West, Dalad West
 The rest: Shacheng, Xuanhua, Shalingzi West, Chaigoupu, Tianzhen, Yanggao, Datong, Fengzhen, Jining South, Hohhot East, Hohhot, Salaqi, Chasuqi, Baotou East
 

Better to travel by overnight sleeper trains

For budget travelers or those who don’t have time to travel in the day, they are advised to travel by overnight sleeper trains such as K263/K264, K573/K574, K597/K598, K41, Z317, K885, K56, K1117 and Z180. Traveling by any of them can save the day time and one-night accommodation fee. Usually, it is advised to purchase a soft or hard sleeper for this journey.
 

Beijing - Baotou High Speed Trains

Beijing - Baotou High Speed Railway consists of Beijing – Zhangjiakou, Zhangjiakou – Hohhot and Hohhot – Baotou High Speed Railways.
 Beijing – Zhangjiakou: This section is under construction and will open by the end of 2019, by then, duration between the two cities will be shortened to 1 hour.
 Zhangjiakou – Hohhot: This section is under construction and will be put into service in 2018. After its completion, the two cities can be reached within 2 hours.
 Hohhot – Baotou: This section has come into service since January 8th, 2015. Duration between the two cities is reduced to 1 hour or so.

When Beijing – Zhangjiakou and Zhangjiakou – Hohhot sections are completed, Beijing and Baotou can be reached by high speed trains within 4 hours.
 

Beijing – Baotou Train vs. Flight

Direct flights are available between the two cities, taking around 1.5 hours for a single trip. Full price for an economy class seat is CNY810 or CNY890 based on the different airports. Usually, when the airlines offer discounts, the ticket fare for an economy class seat may be low to CNY250 – CNY450.

In contrast, overnight sleeper trains are also good choices as they can save the day time and one-night hotel expenses. With a hard or soft sleeper, passengers can lie down to have a good rest as well.

What does the mark "+" means in timetable?
The trains are very likely delayed?

No, it only means the second day. If it is 8:00+, then the arrival time will be the second day of departure at 8am. However, yes, normal slow rides sometimes delays, but not always.
