Xi'an - Baotou Train

Over five pairs of normal speed trains are operated between Xi'an Railway Station / Xi'an South Railway Station and Baotou Railway Station.

They finish different running distances of 899/ 915/ 942/ 964 kilometers (559/ 569/ 585/ 599 miles) in 11 - 13.5 hours. The ticket fare for a soft sleeper is CNY357/ 381 and a hard sleeper costs CNY245/ 260.

In addition, high speed trains between the two cities with around 5 hours’ duration will be put into use by the end of 2022.

Xi'an - Baotou High Speed Train

The high speed railway between Xi'an and Baotou, a section of the Baotou - Haikou high speed railway, is in the planning stage and expected to open in 2022. With a total length of about 800 kilometers (497 miles) and a planned top speed of 350 km/h (218 mph), it will greatly shorten the rail travel time between the two cities to around 5 hours..

Tips for the Xi'an - Baotou Train

Tickets for the overnight sleeper trains, including K656/655, K692/691, are in great demand most of the time. Please reserve tickets in advance to make sure your travel is more comfortable and as smooth as planned.

Xi'an South Station is located in a small town of the Chang’an district 30 kilometers away from the center of Xi'an. A small number of trains stop there mainly headed to towns in Southwest China, such as Sichuan, Chongqing and Guiyang. There are only four pairs of city buses near the station and the transportation is inconvenient.

Xi'an Station, which has convenient transportation, lies in the downtown area. Over 70 pairs of city buses, metro line 1 opened in 2013 and Line 4, expected to open in 2018, are running to connect the whole city. There are also airport shuttle buses serving passengers from the railway station to the airport. So use of this station is recommended.

Anyone tried hard sleeper bed on overnight train?

I plan to take train K656 to Baotou. I am not sure if hard sleeper is a good option as no soft sleeper tickets anymore. If there is no carriage door, will it be easy to be disturbed at stopover stations?

This is indeed a problem, but not too bad. The situation is better if you use an upper bed but the space is very small there compared with middle and lower bed. Light will be off since 11pm. If you are a light sleeper, it would be a little bit hard.
