Beijing – Hohhot High Speed Train

Beijing – Hohhot High Speed Railway consists of three sections.
Beijing - Zhangjiakou High Speed Railway: It is under construction and may operate in 2019 to serve Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
Zhangjiakou - Wulanchabu High Speed Railway: This section under construction is scheduled to open in 2018.
Wulanchabu – Hohhot High Speed Railway: This section was put into operation on August 3rd, 2017, which means that Inner Mongolia steps into High Speed Rail Era. It runs for a distance of 126 km (78 miles) at the top running speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The duration is 40 minutes.

The whole line will be put into use in 2019; by then the journey time between the two cities will be greatly reduced to 3 hours and tourists can have a day tour between Beijing and Inner Mongolia.

Beijing – Hohhot Train vs. Flight

If you travel by rail, especially by overnight sleeper trains departing in the evening and arriving in the morning, you can save one-night accommodation fee and the day time. It is suitable to budget travelers.

As an alternative, passengers can also travel by flight. It takes about an hour for this journey, but there are only 9 direct flights per day and flight ticket costs more than rail ticket. Weather change can easily lead to flight delays, which may cause a waste of time.

After the completion of Beijing – Hohhot High Speed Railway in 2019, the total consumed time of flight and bullet train will have no big difference. But with cheaper ticket price, high speed train will be the best choice for most travelers.

You need to be one hour in advance for K3 trip, so 3 hours between should be enough. The railway station work 24 hours a day, so it is fine to stay there. By the way, you may consider to take the train K3 from Jining South instead of Beijing as well which is closer to Hohhot.
