Xian - Lanzhou Railway Map

 Lanzhou to Xian High Speed Railway stretches across northwest China, connecting Xian-Luoyang-Zhengzhou and Zhengzhou-Xuzhou High Speed Railways to the east, and linking Lanzhou-Urumqi High Speed Railway to the west. As a major part of Four East - West High Speed Rail Lines, it is an important channel to connect north and northwest China with east and central China; after being put into operation, a much faster transfer between Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai and Lanzhou, Urumqi, and other northwest areas has been possible.
 Xian - Baoji Railway: This section has been in service since December 28th, 2013. The total length is 167 kilometers (104 miles). The top running speed is up to 250 km/h (155 mph). The duration between the two cities is 1 hour or so.

Baoji - Lanzhou Railway: As a major part of Xuzhou-Lanzhou High Speed Railway, this section, also called Baoji - Lanzhou High Speed Railway, has a distance of 401 km (249 miles). It has been operated since July 9, 2017. The designed running speed is 250 km/h (155 mph). After operation, Baoji - Lanzhou High Speed Trains has shortened the duration between the two cities to 2 hours.
 Traveling northwestward along Xian to Lanzhou High Speed Rail Line will give you a chance to visit the ancient Silk Road and experience different natural and human landscapes. This journey will be a transition from the central Shaanxi plain to the junction point of Loess Plateau, Tibetan Plateau and Inner Mongolian Plateau. Along this way, you will be able to appreciate the prosperous cities, the quiet villages, the fertile fields, the barren mountains and hills. These complicated landforms will leave you a deep impression and make you know well about northwest China.
 At present, about 30 pairs of normal trains are operated between Xian Railway Station and Lanzhou Railway Station / Lanzhou West Railway Station and some of them are overnight trains. The travel time is 7 - 9 hours.

Xian - Lanzhou Overnight Train

 

The most recommended is high speed trains, which save both time and money. If you are a budget traveler, overnight sleeper trains, including T269, K305, K177, K1309 and K227 are also preferable choices; they can save your day time and one-night accommodation fee.

About 1.5 hours are needed when you travel by flight; and an economy class seat usually costs about CNY 300 - 500 (US$ 43 - 72). However, counting in the time to / from airports in both cities, the duration on the way is even longer than bullet trains. Also, flights can be easily affected by weather change and air control.

A coach takes about 11 hours; and the ticket price is CNY 220 (US$ 32) or so. Traveling by coach is not advised if you have other choices because it will be boring and time-consuming, and less comfortable.
