Highlights of Ancient Sudan

When you land at the Khartoum International Airport (KRT) today, you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to the hotel, which is 7 kilometers away from the airport. Located at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile, the hotel is a landmark building in central Khartoum. You could fully relax at the hotel to prepare yourself for the following journey.

This morning, your guide and driver will pick you up from hotel and transfer you to visit Al-Morgan, one of the most iconic spots in Khartoum. You will see the confluence of the White and Blue Nile. Next, explore the National Museum of Sudan where houses a large number of well-preserved Nubian archaeological collections from the Paleolithic to the Islamic period in Sudan.

After a short drive across the White Nile, we will view the Mahdi Tomb in Omdurman and its small museum which commemorates the Islamic leader of Sudan, Mohammed Ahmed. Then you can experience the Sudanese traditional life while walking through the African bustling souk (market). Finally, we will pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum with its reconstructed temples.

After early breakfast, we will depart from Khartoum and drive 500 Kilometers (310 miles) north to Dongola. En route stop at Wadi Muqaddam for a lunch break. It takes around 5-6 hours’ driving to arrive at the desert town, Old Dongola. You can admire the spectacular landscape of the Western desert along the way. Your guide will show you around the archaeological site of this uninhabited city and take you to discover the Christian ruins of the Coptic churches. Here, you can get a chance to ride a camel leisurely in the desert, indulging yourself in the open air and appreciating sunset among the undulating dunes.

Today, we leave for Karima by 2.5 hours' driving with the distance of 208 Kilometers (129 miles). Upon arrival, explore the holy mountain Jebel Barkal with the remains of temple and sanctuaries. Then, continue driving through the Nubian Desert to visit the necropolis of El-Kurru, which has the earliest archaeological record of the Kush Kingdom. Your guide will escort you to admire the well-preserved paintings inside the Tombs of King Tanwetamani and his mother, Queen Qalhata (circa 680 BC) at El-Kurru. Jebel Barkal together with El Kurru are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Late in the afternoon, we will take a beautiful drive in the Nubian village to see brightly painted traditional houses, and stay overnight at a Nubian-style house.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will lead you to the famous Meroe pyramids with a distance of 400 Kilometers (248 miles) crossing the Bayuda desert, which is about 5 hours' drive away. After arriving at the royal city of Meroe, we will pay a visit to the enigmatic remains of ancient Meroe and view the necropolis in the Nile valley. Next, drive south to the historical site of Musawwarat es-Sufra, and discover the temple of Amun in the ancient cultic center of Naga. At dusk, you can admire the wonderful sunset over the spellbinding pyramids, which will bring you unforgettable moments in this pure land.

Today you will have one more chance to view the Meroe’s spellbinding pyramids in the morning. Afterwards, your guide will take you on a boat cruise towards the 6th Cataract of the Nile, where you can enjoy picturesque rapids and beautiful views along the banks. In the afternoon, we will drive north around 3 hours to the capital Khartoum and check into the same hotel. You are free to make your own arrangements for a romantic evening near the Nile.
