Guilin - Nanning Train

Normally there are over 60 pairs of trains available a day. Among them, over 45 pairs are high speed G and D types which take only around 2.5 to 3 hours. The rest 15 or so pairs of normal rides take longer time of about 3.5 to 8 hours.

Alternatively, there are one or two pairs of flights a day between. The duration is only about an hour. However, the airports in both cities are far from the city center. If you take the time of transfer to/from airport into consideration, the overall duration is not a big difference with high speed rides; but the flight ticket price is much higher on most days.

High Speed Trains

These bullet trains are top choices for a transfer between the two cities due to its short duration and frequency.

Except D8201/D8202, D8203/D8204, D8205, D8208, D8210, D8211/D8212 and D8214, other rides take both cities as stopovers and some only stop for a few minutes. Thus, travelers are advisable to pay attention to the broadcast and LED screen in the carriage for the next destination and make preparation in advance.

Except Z5/Z6 which stop at Guilin Railway Station, other rides all use North Railway station. In Nanning, they all stop at the main station. Although these normal rides take longer time, they can still be complementary option for travelers who need to travel in late night or early morning when high speed types are not available. A few overnight sleeper trains like K315 and K2386 may fit budget travelers more since they can help in saving hotel cost as well as daytime for visiting.

Is it necessary to book the tickets in advance?
Or I can buy it at station directly on the day of travel? Is this Guilin to Nanning trip a popular route in winter?

It mainly depends on your travel date and your schedule. If you will be traveling during the New Year Rush, you absolutely need to book one in advance. If during normal days and with flexible schedule, it is possible to buy it after your arrival. By the way, you can also buy the tickets from any railway station in China mainland, so if you decide to buy it at station, you may do it once after your arrival in China, not have to be in Guilin.
