One Day Chengdu Food Tour

Dujiangyan Irrigation System
This is a one day tour including the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project and the Chuancais Museum (Sichuan Cuisine Museum) for independent travelers.

This morning, you should get up earlier and find your way to Chengdu Railway Station first. Subway line 1 and many buses (1, 15, 24, 28, etc.) reach this railway station. Take the bullet train to Dujiangyan City, only half an hour or so, and then you can take no. 4 bus to Liduigongyuan station to reach Dujiangyan scenic area. The train is available hourly and we suggest that you take the one leaving at 07:48. The train ticket is CNY15. If you travel during Chinese holidays, you would better book the train tickets online in advance.

Dujiangyan Irrigation Project was built over 2200 years ago and it is still being used today. It is one of the earliest no-dam irrigation and anti-flood system in the world. Seeing this amazing engineering feat, you will be in awe by what ancient Chinese were capable of doing. The entrance ticket is CNY90. You may hire a guide or rent a headset to hear the details. Two hours are enough to tour around.

After that, you can take bus no. 7 to Dujiangyan Bus Station. There are regular buses to Chengdu stopping over in Pixian Country, where the Chuancais Museum is located. After around 50 minutes, you will get off at Pixian Bus station. To save your time, you may take a taxi to Chuancais Museum in 16 minutes with a cost of less than CNY30, because the bus will take around one hour.

Chuancais Museum was built in local traditional architectural style with a beautiful outdoor garden. You will spend the whole afternoon in this museum. It is fascinating to tour around this museum, not only because its great collections of cultural relics, showing the cooking stories of Sichuan people, cooking utensils, liquor, table wares and tea sets, etc. but also for its interactive activities with travelers. Cooking class is the highlight. You will watch the real chef cooking Sichuan dishes and learn to cook some classical ones, such as Kung Pao chicken, Mapo Tofu and panda dumplings. It could be a quite delightful experience to cook behind the hot woks in chef uniform, have dinner with your creation and finally get the cooking certificate "Rookie Master Chef" by the master chef. Over here, you will also see how spicy bean paste is made and fermented as there displays more than 200 pots of chili bean paste in the outdoor. The tour around the museum also has some yummy stops along the way. You can taste various kinds of snack, noodles, steamed buns, dumplings and soup.

The admission fee of Chuancais Museum is CNY360 including the cooking class and English speaking tour guide. The reservation should be made at least one day beforehand. You can call the museum for reservation at 028-87918008. The opening hour is 09:00 - 18:00.
After finishing the visit, you could take bus 722 to Xipu station, and then take subway line 2 get back to Chengdu. The whole journey takes around two hours. Or you may take bus 363 to Pixian Bus Station where find the bus 305 to Jinsha Bus station in Chengdu. Then find a bus or taxi back to your hotel.
