Suzhou-Nanjing Train

Currently, you can make a day tour between Suzhou and Nanjing by direct train or coach. There is no doubt that rail travel is the most preferable choice for tourists. About 226 more pairs of trains are operated between: around 163 more pairs of them are bullet trains with duration of 1 – 2.5 hours; and the other 63 more pairs are normal types running for 1.5 –  4 hours. If by coach, it takes about 3 hour or so, longer than high speed rides; and it costs a little more than rail travel. What's more, room in the coach is more limited and a ride in it is not as comfortable as a rail travel.

As Suzhou does not have its own passenger airport, visitors need to go to the nearby Shanghai to take the flight and it will be a detour, so traveling by air is not recommended for this trip.

High Speed Train

Around 135 more pairs of G type and 26 more  pairs of D types run between the two cities at present. They all run in daytime; no bullet overnight sleeper trains are running for this route.

The G types run for 135 miles (217 km) at a top speed of 186 miles/h (300 km/h) and the whole journey takes 1 - 2 hours. The D types run for 141 miles (227 km) with the allowed top speed of 155 mi/h (250 km/h) and it takes 1 - 2.5 hours for the whole travel. Other differences between G types and D types you may want to know: the ticket fare for G types costs more than that of D types; except the first and second class seats, some of the G types provide business class seats.

There are more than one railway stations in both cities:
In Suzhou, most of them arrive at or depart from Suzhou Railway Station, so there are more departure and arrival choices for passengers. The station is also closer to city center, so there is no doubt that it is the first choice. Some of them run to/from North Railway Station, while only a few rides operate at Industrial Zone Station and New District Station; if the schedule fits and you are staying near these stations, you may choose to use them.

In Nanjing, some of them run to/from main railway station and most of them go to/from South Station. The former station is closer to the city center and nearby attraction sites compared with the latter one; but you can have more choices at the south station although it's a little far from the city center. But there is no need to worry. The transportation around the South Station is convenient, and you can choose subways, city buses and taxis to the nearby attraction sites.

One thing needs to be noticed is that all high speeds just have Suzhou as an intermediate stop, and Nanjing is also an intermediate stop for most of them while only a few of them end/originate from here. When you get off at the intermediate stations, please pack up your luggage ahead of time because usually, they just stop for several minutes for passengers to get off. You should listen to the broadcast notices carefully and move quickly to get off.

The major stations along the way include Wuxi, Wuxi East, Wuxi New District, Huishan, Qishuyan, Changzhou, Changzhou North, Danyang, Danyang North, Dantu, Zhenjiang, Zhenjiang South, Baohuashan, and Xianlin.

In addition, you are advised to take those running during the day. It's a short travel and you can appreciate the sceneries along the way. Also, the carriages for hard seats may be crowded and the environment is not that good. So if possible, you can purchase a sleeper which won't cost a lot and you will feel more comfortable.

City Guides
As two of the famous tourist destinations in China, Suzhou and Nanjing attract many tourists to view the beautiful sceneries and experience their culture and custom. The former is praised as the 'Venice of the Orient' and bears many elegant classical gardens and beautiful water townships; the latter was once the capital city of six dynasties of ancient China and it has lots of brilliant cultural heritages. If you come to China, you should never miss the two places.
