Beijing - Datong Train

8 high speed trains set out from Beijing North Railway Station or Qinghe Railway Station and arrive at Datong South Railway Station. The travel time is about 2 - 2.5 hours.

Nearly 20 pairs of non-bullet trains are running between Beijing Railway Station/ West Railway Station and Datong Railway Station everyday. Although the distance between is only around 230 miles (370 kilometers), the duration varies from 6 to 7.5 hours since the top speed is only 99 mph (160 km/h).

As an alternative, there are usually 2 pairs of flights a day between the two cities with duration of about only 1 hour. A good discount ticket during off season can be cheap. But in most of the year, it is much more expensive than the railway ticket.

If you are gonging to travel overnight, it is advisable to plan your trip and book the ticket in advance since these overnight ones are usually popular among Chinese people and their tickets are usually in great demand. For an overnight trip, it is more recommended to book a berth like soft sleeper or hard sleeper instead of seat. Hard seat carriages can be crowded during busy dates.

Passengers who hold the sleeper tickets will be offered a plastic card as boarding pass when board the train and your paper ticket will be changed back when your destination is approaching. In this way, passengers will not oversleep and miss their destination. Passengers who booked seats need to pay attention to the broadcast to make preparation for leaving in advance.

After boarding, passengers can arrange their luggage on luggage rack above seats or under lower berths. Please take your valuables with you. For travelers who are not in favor of simple Chinese food, it would be good to prepare some food on your own before boarding.

Datong to beijing by train
1. How to reach Beijing train station from beijing international airport ? By airport bus or subway or taxi?
2. Is the current time table for train to datong is 3pm(last train) and the next train is from 8.35pm onward,
is this correct? Any changes ? For I am not sure to reach Beijing airport in the morning or in the afternoon?
3. Which is more economical and convenient? Stay in airport hotel for a night and catch the next morning early flight or travel about 6 hours to datong on the very day ?
4. Any problem to buy the ticket in end October on the very day?
Thanks.

There will be airport shuttle bus between beijing airport and railway stations in Beijing. You can also use subway, but no direct line. Not sure about train time you mentioned, but you can check on this website by your date. Train schedule hardly change.

Personally speaking, the most economy way maybe an overnight train to Datong as it save one night hotel cost. But it depends on your flight time. End Oct should not be a hot season.
