Xi'an Weather in August

Season: Summer
In short:
1. Xi’an weather in August features high temperature and relatively high rainfall, not suitable for traveling.
2. A large number of visitors flow into Xi’an this month to spend their summer vacation, making attractions crowded and hotels expensive.

Hot and Sweltering

Although August is actually the last month of summer, the weather of Xi’an is still very hot and sweltering. During the month, the daily maximum temperature is still around 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) most of the time. And there are some days with highs close to 40°C (104°F), when you will feel like being in a “stove”, however, these days mainly appear in the first half of August and no longer as frequent as in July. Towards the end of the month, high temperature may drop to around 30 - 35°C (86 - 95°F), or even below 30°C (86°F) at times, when you generally won't feel particularly hot. However, it should be noted that in recent years, temperature in August has tended to rise due to global warming.

Daily lows are generally around 20 - 25°C (68 - 75°F), which means that early morning and evening are more suitable for outdoor sightseeing.

A Little High Rainfall

Though August is still considered to be in the rainy season, the average rainfall is no longer very high, which is 71 mm. Besides, in the possible 9 rainy days on average, Xi’an may still experience moderate and heavy rain, but usually fewer than the rainiest July.

Will the rainfall bring coolness to Xi’an in August? Generally speaking, on days with short periods of rain, which are more common this month, the temperature usually doesn’t drop much, and the rapid evaporation of rain leads to a rise in air humidity, so the climate of Xi’an can be even more sultry instead. Persistent rain, on the other hand, generally brings coolness.

Daylight & Sunshine Hours

Though the daytime is shortening in August, it is still about 13 hours on average, and the sunrise and sunset take place at about 05:00 - 06:17 and 19:12 - 19:46 respectively. Besides, on average, the sun shines for about 7 hours per day this month. These do provide you with more traveling time, but also lead to a longer hot duration in a day.

The UV index is as high as 10 in August, and many people will choose to use parasols on sunny days to protect themselves from the UV rays.

Bigger Crowds & Higher Travel Costs

The whole month of August coincides with the summer vacation in China, and a lot of students will use this opportunity to travel. Therefore, Xi’an, a popular city for traveling, is full of tourists this month, and you may feel crowded whether in attractions, transportation such as buses and metro trains, or restaurants and drink stores.

As for expenses, hotel prices will rise significantly due to the surge in the number of visitors. Moreover, some scenic spots, such as Mt. Huashan, are adopting higher peak season ticket prices this month.

Is August A Good Time to Visit Xi’an?

You are not recommended to visit Xi’an in August. Though the city is beautiful with green and lush plants, the climate is hot, accompanied by strong UV rays. There are also some rainy days that may interfere with your travel plans to some extent. Besides, with a large number of visitors, you can hardly appreciate the complete beauty of the city or enjoy a leisurely and quiet trip.

But if you have made the decision, the below information will be helpful.

Packing List for Xi’an Trip in August

Xi'an Clothes in August
Clothes: Generally speaking, thin, cool and breathable T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, and dresses are needed to cope with the heat. You need to bring a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of thin long pants to cope with the coolness brought about by rain. The long-sleeved shirt is also useful in places with air conditioning, like subways and malls.

Shoes: Compared with sandals, thin and breathable sneakers and water shoes that are more comfortable and suitable for walking are more recommended. What’s more, bring waterproof shoe covers for rainy days.

Others: Sunhats, sunglasses, and sunscreen will protect you from the strong sunshine and ultraviolet. Besides, considering that there are still some rainy days, a parasol or an umbrella is recommended to prepare.

Advice for Xi’an Trip in August

Travel Recommendation Rate:

Given that August is still hot, it is recommended that you make the most of the cooler early mornings and evenings. For example, in the early morning, you can pay a visit to the ancient City Wall, as well as the City Wall Park nearby, where you can see local people doing morning exercise. Or, set out early for the Terracotta Army to have a relatively quiet and less-crowded trip. After all, in the extremely crowded space, you may not be able to get enough fresh air and feel stuffy, despite the air conditioning working. In the evening, you can visit the illuminated Bell Tower, admire the night view of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and enjoy Xi’an’s specialties such as Rou Jia Mo and Liangpi and buy souvenirs in the Muslim Quarter. During the hottest midday hours, it is advisable to go to air-conditioned indoor places such as museums, shopping centers, or restaurants.
