Xi'an Weather in November
Season: Autumn
1. As the last month of Autumn in Xi’an, November features dropping temperature and the weather becomes cold.
2. The precipitation is low this month, and the first snow may fall in late month.
3. November is the slack season in Xi’an, a perfect time for a quiet and leisurely trip.
Cold Time Begins
November is the month when Xi'an becomes colder and colder. In the first half of the month, the daily high temperature is usually above 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit), and may even reach 20°C (68°F) in the first a few days if it’s sunny. The daily low is around 10°C (50°F), but a sudden drop to about 5°C (41°F) may also occur. During this period, you may just feel a little cold, mainly in the early morning and evening.
In the second half of the month, when it is noticeably colder than the first half, the maximum temperature decreases to around 10°C (50°F) gradually, but the minimum plummets a lot to 0-5°C (32-41°F) and even below 0°C (32°F) sometimes. Due to the temperature drop, indoor places begin to be heated from November 15th on, including indoor scenic spots, hotels, and shopping malls.
To prevent catching a cold, you are recommended to pay special attention to the large temperature difference between day and night, as well as between indoor and outdoor places, especially in the second half of the month.

Low Precipitation, First Snow May Fall
November belongs to the dry season of Xi’an, when the city sees only an average precipitation of 24 mm from about 6 days. The precipitation mainly falls in the form of light rain, but in late November, the city may experience its first snow. Compared with the downtown areas, mountain areas are of higher possibility to have snow because of the lower temperature. So if you have plans to climb the Huashan Mountain or the Cuihua Mountain, check the weather forecast and make enough preparations in advance.
On the whole, it snows and rains slightly and quite occasionally in November. But it is worth mentioning that sunny days are not so many, instead, cloudy and overcast weather is the majority.
Short Daylight & Sunshine Hours
With the decline of daylight hours from about 10.5 to 10 in November, many attractions in Xi’an shorten their opening hours. For instance, from November 16 on, the Terracotta Army adjusts its opening hours from 08:30-18:30 to 08:30-18:00. Be sure to make proper traveling plans accordingly. As mentioned above, cloudy and overcast days dominate this month, so the sunshine hours are as short as about 4.
The UV index is 4 this month, you may only need to make sun protection measures for midday outings.

An OK Visiting Month in the Low Season

Advice for Xi’an Trip in November

With fewer visitors, November is definitely a good time to carefully and quietly appreciate the world-famous Terracotta Army, admire the solemn Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, have a relaxed biking trip on the ancient City Wall, etc.
For detailed travel plans, here are some suggestions for you:
Recommended Tours
1. If it is possible, you are recommended to begin your Xi’an trip in early November, when the weather is still cool but not cold in the daytime, and beautiful autumn leaves still decorate the city.
2. Try not to begin your trip too early or end it too late, as the temperature before sunrise and after sunset is much lower than the period when the sun is shining.
3. The morning is more prone to be foggy, so you are advised to schedule indoor venues such as the Terracotta Army and the Shaanxi History Museum then, whose grandeur won’t be affected by visibility.

4. There may be snow in high-altitude mountain areas, so if you plan to hike in Mt. Huashan, anti-slippery hiking shoes are necessary.
5. Just go and try to experience traditional Chinese clothing if you are interested, without worrying about feeling cold, since there are thick cotton-padded ones for you to choose from. If you are sensitive to coldness, wearing pants underneath won’t detract from the beauty at all. Besides, as it’s the low season, you will not spend a lot of money on renting clothes, nor spend a long time doing makeup.
