Spring: March - May
Weather: Temperature in spring is subject to fluctuation, but warm and cozy overall. The average temperature in March is 4 - 14°C (39 - 67°F), rising to 10 - 21°C (50 - 70°F) in April and 14 - 26°C (57 - 79°F) in May. Summer: June - August
Weather: The most prominent weather feature of summer is hot and rainy. Influenced by the monsoon, precipitation is relatively high at this time that may influence your trip, especially in July and August. Temperature-wise, the average monthly low is around 19 - 21°C (66 - 70°F), and the average monthly high is 31 - 32°C (88 - 90°F). On sunny days, it will be quite hot, and it’s not at all surprising for the highest temperatures reaching around 40°C (104°F). Autumn: September - November
Weather: The temperature of Xi’an in autumn is warm or cool most of the time, but in a downward trend. In September and October, it averages at 16 - 25°C (61 - 77°F) and 10 - 20°C (50 - 68°F) respectively, but in November, it drops quickly to about 3 - 12°C (37 - 54°F). In terms of rainfall, the city experiences a fair amount of precipitation during September and October, and it’s better to check the weather forecast in advance to decrease the influence of rain on your trip. In November, however, the rainfall is low and its impact on travel can be ignored.
Clothes: Since the large temperature difference from month to month, you may need to wear T-shirts plus shorts in early autumn, long-sleeve shirts plus thin long pants in middle autumn, and thick jackets plus thick sweatpants in late autumn. Winter: December - February
Weather: Except the coldest January, the daily low temperature in winter is hardly below -5°C (23°F), sometimes even above 0°C (32°F); while the daily high temperature is usually around 10°C (50°F), and may drop to about 5°C (41°F) on wet days. So, winter in Xi’an is generally not unbearably cold. This is the time when Xi’an is dry and receives the lowest precipitation.
