Running Route of High Speed Trains between Hong Kong and Kunming
1. Hong Kong - Guangzhou: It is a section of Guangzhou - Shenzhen - Hong Kong High Speed Railway, also called Guangzhou - Shenzhen - Hong Kong Express Rail Link. Some major stations along this railway contain Futian, Shenzhen North, Guangmingcheng, Humen and Qingsheng.
Actually, on December 26, 2011, the Guangzhou - Shenzhen section was officially opened with a speed up to 350 km/h (217 mph). It only takes 29 - 50 minutes between Guangzhou South Station and Shenzhen North Station. Hong Kong - Shenzhen Section was put into use on September 23, 2018; trains running in this section can reach 200 km/h (124 mph) and the running time only requires 50 minutes or so.
2. Guangzhou - Nanning: It has been in service since December 26, 2014 and mainly passes by Nanning, Nanning East, Binyang, Guigang, Guiping, Pingnan South, Tengxian, Wuzhou South, Yunan, Nanjiangkou, Yunfu East, Zhaoqing East and Shanshui South. Its overall length is about 574 km (357 mi) and the running top speed reaches 200 km/h (124 mph).
3. Nanning - Kunming: It was fully opened on December 28, 2016. With top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), trains run along this about 710-kilometer-long (441-mile) railway. Major stations along the way include Long'an East, Pingguo, Tiandong North, Tianyang, Baise, Funing, Guangnanxian, Puzhehei, Mile and Shilin West.

It is obvious that taking Hong Kong to Kunming train or Kunming to Hong Kong train is slower and costs more than taking planes. Therefore, high speed train is more suitable for passengers who have limited budget and enough travel time. On the other hand, it is a better choice to travel by air for passenger with limited travel time and sufficient budget.

According to my searching, there is no fixed price but very likely around USD200 or RMB1500. You can choose a random date for a try. During holiday time, it could be very different though.

Yes, all luggage need to go through the check. Sharp, dangerous objects and explosives etc things are not allowed.

How soon before I travel will the tickets be available for collection ? E.g. 30 days before travel ?
If I need to Cancel my booking after paying for the tickets , how do I do that ? What is the cancellation fee ?

The ticket sale since 30 days, but the earliest time for collection depends on when your tickets will be confirmed. This website ask cancellation email if you decide to cancel the booking and the cancellation fee is 20% of ticket price. If they haven't confirm your ticket yet, it is free cancellation.

Do we clear immigration at the train station as we exit China for Hong Kong?
Thinking of boarding the train on the last day of my permit, so I'm pretty worried about this.

I am not sure about this train, but see from the time, there should be box meal for sale as it meets lunch and dinner time. However, credit card is definitely not accepted. You would need cash (Chinese Yuan) instead.
